PrODUCED and edited by terry Halbert

I am very grateful to the people who were part of Common Ground for their kindness in responding to my out-of-the-blue request to interview them after 42 years, and for answering my many questions as best they could, even the nosey ones.

Special thanks to:

Dave Robertson for showing me around Cottiers and Websters on an otherwise working day for him in the summer of 2017.

Marion Mackintosh for weaving her wit and jokes into the conversation we had in the kitchen of my Glasgow airbnb, and for a great dinner at Leiper’s Attic.

Allan Tall for walking me over to 30 Athole Gardens and helping me say the right things to the people who now occupy upmarket flats in what was once our commune--things that got me in to take photos inside.

Peter Chaloner for listening closely to every single audio file as it was birthed, for giving me fulsome and timely feedback, and for encouraging me throughout this project.

Lesley Kamel for warmly welcoming me to her town Dundee after we hadn’t spoken to one another for maybe two decades, and for showing me her work life, her artistic life her hillwalking life and her tiny house.

Mick West for hosting me in his flat full of beautiful antiques, pictures of his dear family and a gorgeous kimono on the wall, and for sharing his wonderful singing.

Alison Heru for bringing me out to Denver and carving out two full days from her high-flying life for us to catch up on our friendship, and for taking me to her cabin in the magic forest where we talked about what makes a commune work and not work.

Brian Buchanan for sharing the best cache of photos from back then of anyone’s, for giving me his perfect music for the audio clips, and for breakfast with Thessa.

Fanni for letting me land on her late on a summer night, for showing me her lovely garden, and for tolerating my need to rush back again to Euston so I could catch my flight (thanks to Claude too)!

Davie Redpath for letting me interview him on the phone, and for sharing funny stories about the mischief he and his brother made at Common Ground.

Dave Cruikshank for welcoming me to his aerie in Rye with the seagulls, for his frankness, and for steadily urging me on with this project without needing to claim it in any way as his own.

Several people in Philadelphia pulled me through, and I am deeply grateful to them as well.

Anne Hoffman consulted with me on Hindenberg and on big picture questions in the early weeks of editing.

Alex Schein, my son-in-law, has been willing to put in hours to help, first teaching me my equipment and later building this lovely website. I am very much the beneficiary of Alex’s sweet temperament and fiercely good taste.

My husband Bill Coleman listened more than once to every audio clip. I only caught him looking sideways at the newspaper once. He has not fussed over me wearing headphones in the kitchen. He has given me nothing but flat-out praise and encouragement for months.

My daughter Thea Chaloner, who was a baby in Common Ground, has been in the weeds with every bit of this project, from my first mutterings about it. She did a wonderful job interviewing me. Her close listening and detailed feedback have been precious. Thea has pushed me to understand myself as an artist.
